Leaders of the Civil War

The American Civil War (1861-1865) involved many important people who shaped the conflict. Understanding their roles helps us understand the war itself.

Abraham Lincoln, as President of the United States, led the Union (the North). His main goal was to preserve the Union, and he famously issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate territories free. This changed the focus of the war to include ending slavery.

Ulysses S. Grant was the Union's most successful general. Known for his determination, Grant won key battles like Vicksburg and eventually became the commander of all Union armies. His leadership was crucial to the Union victory.

On the Confederate side (the South), Jefferson Davis served as President. He struggled to unite the Confederacy and secure recognition from foreign countries.

Robert E. Lee was the Confederacy's top general. A brilliant military strategist, Lee led the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and won many battles against larger Union forces. However, his defeat at Gettysburg and eventual surrender at Appomattox Courthouse marked the end of the war.

Other important figures include Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, known for his "March to the Sea," and Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, a skilled commander who died early in the war. These leaders, and many others, played significant roles in the Civil War, influencing its course and outcome.
