Guided Notes
3 key concepts
- 1
The null hypothesis states that a change has no effect, while the alternative hypothesis suggests the change does have an effect.
- 2
The p-value is the probability of obtaining a statistic at least as far from the mean as the one observed, assuming the null hypothesis is true.
- 3
If the p-value is less than the significance level (alpha), you reject the null hypothesis and have evidence for the alternative hypothesis.

Quick comprehension check
“A company claims that the average lifespan of their lightbulbs is 1000 hours. You suspect the lifespan is actually less than that. You take a sample of 64 lightbulbs and find the sample mean lifespan is 950 hours. You calculate a p-value of 0.02. If your significance level (α) is 0.05, what is your conclusion regarding the company's claim? Explain your reasoning.”
