Guided Notes

3 key concepts

  • 1

The null hypothesis states that a change has no effect, while the alternative hypothesis suggests the change does have an effect.

  • 2

The p-value is the probability of obtaining a statistic at least as far from the mean as the one observed, assuming the null hypothesis is true.

  • 3

If the p-value is less than the significance level (alpha), you reject the null hypothesis and have evidence for the alternative hypothesis.

Quick comprehension check

A company claims that the average lifespan of their lightbulbs is 1000 hours. You suspect the lifespan is actually less than that. You take a sample of 64 lightbulbs and find the sample mean lifespan is 950 hours. You calculate a p-value of 0.02. If your significance level (α) is 0.05, what is your conclusion regarding the company's claim? Explain your reasoning.
