In a mutualistic relationship, both species benefit from the interaction. In a parasitic relationship, one species (the parasite) benefits at the expense of the other species (the host), which is harmed.

Consider a scenario where two different species of birds hunt the same type of insect in a forest. As the insect population decreases due to a drought, what type of interdependent relationship is most likely to intensify between the two bird species, and why?

Competition. As the insect population (a limited resource) decreases, the two bird species will increasingly compete for the same food source, leading to a negative impact on both populations as they struggle to find enough food.

A specific type of fungus grows on the roots of a tree. The fungus helps the tree absorb more water and nutrients from the soil, and in return, the tree provides the fungus with sugars produced during photosynthesis. What type of interdependent relationship is this, and explain how both organisms benefit.

This is a mutualistic relationship. The fungus benefits by receiving sugars (food) from the tree, and the tree benefits by gaining improved water and nutrient absorption from the soil due to the fungus.
